This page will examine PRECISION FLYING,
AIR RALLY and
CIVIL AVIATION PENTATHLON

These three competitions are very close to being one art, while at the same time retaining the discipline of precision flying.
Below you will find a description.

PRECISION FLYING

What is precision flying?

PRECISION FLYING is, in general terms, a cross country flight with landing tests for light aircraft for a solo pilot. The purpose is to demonstrate the pilot's skill in navigation, general flying ability and a number of other tests associated with flying light aircraft. The competitions are held entirely in VMC conditions and under VFR.

The competition contains three elements:
Navigation - mainly keeping to a predicted log, within seconds, while keeping to the track. Observation test - a test in finding landmarks from photos and locating canvas targets while flying the track. Landings - four different landing types including landing on a preset line on the runway.

How all this is done:
Make a flight plan to a precision of seconds with five way points at which turns are made.
Draw the track on a map with a scale of 1:250,000. Mark the chart with time points along the plotted track.
Fly the track plotted. The flying time will be about one hour.
Keep to the time predicted during the flight, preferably within seconds.
Locate the landmarks in the six photographs and the 20 canvas markers during the flight and plot them on your chart within five mm. The photos are handed to you during the flight plan calculation. The canvas markers have been placed in the terrain and will be about three metres wide.
Every missed photo point and canvas, as well as the crossing of timing points at the wrong time will cause points to be deducted.
To this point you have performed the navigation and observation tests.

The landings are performed at a mini-runway marked in the normal runway. It measures 12 x 72 meters and is marked with paint or chalk each metre.

There are four different landing types:
Normal landing
Forced landing: a landing without the help of the engine.
Forced landing: no help from the flaps or engine.
Obstacle landing: a normal landing but over an obstacle 2 metres high located 50 m in front of the landing line.
Points are deducted for each metre before or after the designated landing line.

The pilot who has the lowest total of points from the three elements navigation, observation and landings is the champion.

In PRECISION FLYING there are the following chamionchips in Sweden:

CLUB CHAMPION
AREA CHAMPION - sanctioned of FSF
SWEDISH CHAMPION - sanctioned of FSF och RF

and outside Sweden:

NORDIC CHAMPION - sanctioned by ANA,KSAK, RF and FAI
EUROPEAN CHAMPION - sanctioned by KSAK, RF and FAI
WORLD CHAMPION - sanctioed by KSAK, RF and FAI

COMPETITION RULES could be ordered from FLYGSPORTFÖRBUNDET (FSF) or from Motorflygförbundet, KSAK, Bromma, Sweden.
FAI stands for FEDERATION AERONAUTIQUE INTERNATIONAL (FAI) . This is our international organisation for flying competitions.

AIR RALLY

AIR RALLY is like PRECISIONFLYING, but with a navigator as well.
These two aviators have to be very coordinated to work as a team.
The flying is mainly just the same as PRECISION FLYING, but is generally on a longer track and with more competition tasks than in the solo competition. Competitions are quite frequent in Europe and on other continents.

In AIR RALLY there are the following championchips:

EUROPEAN CHAMPION
WORLD CHAMPION
Both sanctioned by FAI

You can order competition rules from FEDERATION AERONAUTIQUE INTERNATIONAL (FAI) .

CIVIL AVIATION PENTATHLON

Civil Flying Pentathlon in Swedish "Civil Flyg Fem Camp (CFFK)" is a PRECISION FLYING competition for those who are more physical. The copmetition combines the airmanship of PRECISION FLYING - navigation and landings with the physical swimming, orienteering and cross country running elements.

The purpose is, as in all precisision flying, safety. The pilot should be as skilled as possible in surviving an emergency. A good pilot should be able to navigate well and land on a chosen spot. If a forced landing happens on water, he/she has to be a good swimmer. To get help he/she have to be a good navigator on the ground as well as being able to run fast.

In Civil Aviation Pentathlon there are the following elements:

NAVIGATION with observation - according to PRECISION FLYING rules.
LANDNINGS - according to PRECISION FLYING rules
ORIENTEERING - tree km marked track with 10 stations to point out on your map.
SWIMMING - 100 m breast stroke
CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING - tree km

Civil Aviation Pentathlon has the following championchips:

AREA CHAMPION
SWEDISH CHAMPION
sanctioned by FSF and RF

Competition Rules may be ordered from FLYGSPORTFÖRBUNDET (FSF) .
